Media is a Strong Tool.

Sometimes we let the media control how we take things. Take Vietnam for instance. The media during this time was not reporting a lot of the good things the troops were doing. Instead they were talking about communistic forces advancing and how they were winning. Where as with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan we are seeing a lot of media coverage showing the good that are troops are doing, rather they are winning o not. I think this is a big deal because we base our opinions on the information we are being given around us. I think that is a big reason why we are Pro-war now and was Anti-war during Vietnam.

Good Ol' American Pride

"Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage:
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage.
An' you'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A.
'Cos we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way.

Hey, Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist.
And the eagle will fly and it's gonna be hell,
When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell.
And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you.
Ah, brought to you, courtesy of the red, white and blue."

During the Early 2000's we were faced with an attack on American soil. Terrorist hi-jacked planes and flew them into various buildings and fields throughout America. We were shocked, caught off guard, and infuriated. Music around this time took two sharp turns, some turned to remember the people who's lives were lost in the attacks, like in Allan Jackson's "Where were you". However some singers lashed out at the groups who had coordinated this attack. Toby Keith released "Courtesy of The Red, White, And Blue" This song was kind of opposite of Vietnam era music where we were singing to bring our soldiers home. This time period saw a lot patriotism where we wanted to go fight and to get revenge on our attackers.

Truman Doctrine:

-President Truman set up this policy with the goal to provide military and economic aid to fight communism.
U.S. Foreign Policy (Korea & Vietnam)

- In Korea, we became very involved - President Truman said he would give the Korean government troops, cover and support. In Vietnam, we were quite involved as well. Although many hippies and anti-way protesters existed in America at this time, we sent many troops over to help fight off communism.

Vietnam we sent troops to help fight; in Korea we sent financial aid and support to fight communism without getting physical.

I am

I am
I am a part of the lunch counter sit-in.
I wonder why they think what they are doing will help them.
I hear people yelling mean things at me.
I see people fighting arround me.
I want to be treated like everybody else.
I am a part of the lunch counter sit-in.
I pretend that my feelings are not hurt.
I feel the hot coffee running down my back.
I need to stay focused for what I am fighting for.
I worry about my survival.
I cry, but only on the inside.
I am a part of the lunch counter sit-in
I understand that I might die.
I believe that everyone should have equal rights.
I dream that one day my children will not be judged based on the color of their skin.
I try to keep calm and block out the violence happening arround me.
I hope that we will win.
I am a part of the lunch counter sit-in

Is the American Dream still alive?

Do you think you can be born and the Ghetto and still grown up to be a powerful CEO? Seems like a long shot right? Well back in the day people would come to America for that dream. Thats why its called The American Dream. These people believed in something called meritocracy. Which was anyone who worked hard enough could become successful. I do not think that is true. In todays world the people who are born in the lower classes have it very hard because they are looked down upon. This makes them feel like no matter how hard they work they will not make it. I think this means the success rate of the american dream is falling. Which is a pity because that is what America was about for the longest time.

King or X.

Recently we have been discussing the civil rights movement and some of the greats of that time. Two in particular being the famous Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. We know both of them inspired great movements and could move masses of people with their words. While MLK moved people with his speeches including his "I have a Dream" speech, pushing for government change. Malcolm X wanted African Americans to be treated as though they were human, and equal. His quotes all discuss wanting to be human. Which is an easy idea for everyone to see. That is why I think Malcolm X was the better influence of the time. It is a shame though that both of these men had to die before there words could really take effect.
